How to use this Zakat calculator
Choose your currency (INR, PKR or USD) and type in today's price of one gram of gold and one gram of silver from your local market or jeweller. Then fill in what you own on your zakat date: cash at home, money in bank accounts, gold and silver in grams (jewellery included), the current sale value of business stock, and money other people owe you that you expect to get back. Finally, enter the debts that are due from you now. Press Calculate Zakat and you will see your net zakatable wealth, the nisab value, whether you meet it, and the zakat amount.
Aasaan tareeqa: apni zakat ki tareekh par jo kuch maal hai, sab likhein, karz ghata dein — calculator khud bata dega ke zakat farz hai ya nahi.
The rule: 2.5% on wealth above nisab
Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam. Allah commands it alongside salah: "And establish prayer and give zakah" (Quran 2:43). Who may receive zakat is listed in Quran 9:60: the poor, the needy, those employed to collect it, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, freeing captives, those in debt, in the cause of Allah, and the stranded traveller.
The rate of one-fortieth (2.5%) comes from the Sunnah. In the hadith of Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet ﷺ said that when you have 200 dirhams and a year has passed over them, 5 dirhams are due, and nothing is due on gold until it reaches 20 dinars, on which half a dinar is due (Sunan Abi Dawud 1573, graded sahih by al-Albani). Five out of two hundred is 2.5%. The Prophet ﷺ also said there is no zakat on silver below five awaq (Sahih al-Bukhari 1447).
Why silver nisab is the default
The modern gram figures commonly used for nisab are 87.48 g of gold (20 mithqal) and 612.36 g of silver (200 dirhams). Because silver is much cheaper, the silver nisab is a far lower amount of money, so more people become eligible to pay and more reaches the poor. Many scholars in India and Pakistan advise the silver nisab for cash and mixed wealth for this reason, which is why it is selected by default. Some scholars use the gold nisab, so you can switch to it with one tap. If you are unsure, ask your local scholar which one to follow.
One lunar year (hawl)
Zakat becomes due when your wealth stays at or above nisab for one full Islamic (lunar) year, as mentioned in the same hadith ("and a year has passed over them"). Most people fix a yearly zakat date, often in Ramadan, and calculate on that day. You can find your date with our Hijri date converter.
Important: This tool gives general guidance. Har shakhs ka maamla alag ho sakta hai — apne personal case ke liye kisi mustanad local aalim ya mufti se zaroor mashwara karein.
FAQ / Aksar pooche jaane wale sawal
What is the nisab for zakat in grams?
The commonly used modern figures are 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver. Multiply the grams by today's price per gram to get the nisab amount in your currency.
Gold nisab or silver nisab — which should I use?
This calculator uses silver by default because it is the lower threshold and benefits more poor people; many scholars in South Asia advise it for cash and mixed wealth. Some scholars use gold. Ask your local scholar if you are unsure.
Is zakat due on gold jewellery that is worn?
Scholars differ. The Hanafi school, followed by most Muslims in India and Pakistan, counts worn gold and silver jewellery, so it is included here. Other schools exempt jewellery for normal personal use. Follow the opinion of your scholar.
Can I deduct loans from my zakat calculation?
Deduct debts that are due now (for example this month's instalment or money you must repay soon). For long-term loans, many scholars allow deducting only the portion currently payable. Ask a scholar about your specific loan.
